Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is an INGO established in 2002, with the aim of protecting civilians and reducing violence in conflict zones worldwide through the deployment of unarmed civilian peacekeepers. With international headquarters in Brussels, NP recruits, assesses, and trains civilians from many countries to serve in peacekeeping deployments. At the request of local civil society, NP’s peacekeepers deploy to live and work amidst vulnerable populations affected by violence, in order to reduce violence by enhancing the capacity of affected communities to proactively engage in managing the conflict using nonviolent means. By virtue of their status as nonaligned and nonpartisan internationals, NP peacekeepers are providing protection to those deemed at risk of violence and human rights abuses, and through their proactive presence and good offices create spaces for parties in conflict to communicate, convene, rekindle dialogue, and work toward sustainable solutions.
In the last 10 years, NP has deployed peacekeeping teams in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Guatemala, South Sudan and South Caucasus. Internationally, NP raises awareness towards UN, EU and its member states on the productive role and impact unarmed peacekeeping can make in areas affected by conflict.
